Jorge Quiroz, 21-year-old Baxter student, was killed on January 10, 2008, when a bus in which he was riding was pushed into the Utcubamba River in the Department of Amazonas, Peru, due to a rock/mudslide.  Jorge's mother, Irma, died in this bus accident as well.

 

According to newspaper articles at the time of the accident, there were 49 people on the bus.  Twelve bodies were found soon, 26 were missing and 3 survived the accident with critical injuries.  (We don't know about the 8 unaccounted for)

 

Jorge was on his way to Barquisimeto, Venezuela where he was to complete his 6-month P.A.M. assignment.

 

Jorge's father, Celso Quiroz, who was a preacher in Chota, Peru, thier hometown, died about 6 years ago of cancer.  Jorge had 2 or 3 brothers (1 is married) and one sister, the youngest sibling, who is 15.  His parents had a shoe repair business and now the children are trying to keep the business open.
